Rick Riordan has become one of my favorite authors. I am a total Percy fangirl. Well in this series Leo and Hazel are my favorites. I am still trying to warm up to Annabeth, but she has this sense of entitlement that I found grating in the Jackson series and its further irritating in Heroes of Olympus.
Synopsis: At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?
They have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.
My Thoughts: I really think we are going to see Percy come into his own in this book. Sure Percy staved off the Titans in the first series, but that was a lot of smoke and mirrors and luck. This book is really going to test him. Annabeth is going to test him, and Percy is going to rise to the top. I want to see a lot more of Leo in this book. I feel like Riordan is using him as comedic fodder and he has so much potential. I don't want him regulated to the sidekick role.
I really wish Riordan would research the by-play between POC of their white counterparts a little more. Especially if he is going to pull characters from a time before Civil Rights. Its one thing to stick Hazel in that situation and then put her in the modern world just to give her an interesting backstory. Its another thing to really let Hazel own the world she grew up in and the world she faces now.
The relationship between Hazel and Nico is going to be interesting and I hope Riordan gives it to us.
